PLOT: Summoned to her childhood home to help a new tenant ward the place of murderous spirits, Dr. Elise Rainier () must contend with her own deep psychic scars that haven’t fully healed over the last 57 years. REVIEW: It doesn’t say much for a horror movie when the scariest thing while watching it doesn’t come from the film itself, but from a theater usher who suddenly materializes out of thin air and saunters past the aisle with a sinister red light in hand. I don’t know what that says exactly, but I do know such a thing happened to me during, a formulaically middling but ultimately entertaining prequel solely meant, as far as I can tell, to fill Blumhouse’s moneymaking January calendar slot. Or to give her just due. Over-seasoned horror heads ought not fall for the bait entirely, as THE LAST KEY, by its own well executed design, goes backwards in time, it does not care to progress or push the mythos of the franchise far enough (despite going deep into The Further), nor does it challenge our own constitutionally desensitized threshold for dread. Casual horror fans are sure to be more forgiving, if only marginally, which means THE LAST KEY can only be rightly recommended to the fervid completists who are dying to know how and why Dr. Elise Rainier () has become the person we’ve known her as in the franchise until now. If that’s you, or if you’re a fan of and her getting the well deserved spotlight, THE LAST KEY might very well fit like a charm! In a cruel and unpleasant opener, we’re taken to Five Keys, New Mexico in 1953. Eight year old Elise (Ava Kolker) and her younger brother Christian (Pierce Pope) live with their mom Audrey (Tessa Ferrer) and dad Gerald () on the ground floor of a prison complex where they electrocute cons to death only one story above. As such, the place is littered with evil spiritual afterlife, which Elise has been able to see and communicate with since for some time. I won’t spoil the cogs of this opening scene, but suffice it to say her mom believes in her gift, her dad doesn’t, and poor Christian is scared so shitless he can hardly ever forgive his sister. Cut to California 2010, Elise firmly entrenched in the ghost-hunting biz with her pals Specs (, who once again wrote the screenplay) and Tucker (). Of course, it’s hard to overlook the physical absurdities of this supposedly being a story prequel when all of the actors look eight years older than they did in the first film. Alas, it’s far easier to swallow with the well-timed levity these two knuckleheads Specs and Tucker provide each time out. They really do counterweigh the tone of the film from being too stone-cold-sober serious, without which would make it too unbearable to watch. Elise and the boys head back to Five Keys in order to rid Ted Garza (Kirk Acevado) of a ghastly presence; he's the new owner of the very house she grew up in, no less. Carrying the burden of allowing a deleterious ghost to materialize in the real world, Elise feels it her moral obligation to, against her better judgment, return to her own personal house of horrors and face her past. Along the way she looks up her brother, now in his 60s as well (), who has two daughters of his own, Melissa () and Imogen (Caitlin Gerard). She inevitably endangers them with her mere presence, and when some of them turn up at the house, things move from Gothic fog-hung moodiness to viciously eruptive violence in a quick hurry. Thing is, given the gormless parade of jump-scares and alarming sound-stings, nothing here is all that scary. As far as the frights fair, there was one very well executed sound cue involving a whistle (itself the key to the plot) that briefly startled me, but that was about it. Every other major scare boiled down to images we’ve devoured many a time before, be it darkened figures out of focus slowly approaching in the background, or a longhaired ghouls with crooked double joints crawling rapidly on the floor, etc. I will say, the creepy skeletal key-tipped finger though, as seen on the poster, is a pretty killer addition to the action. By any measure though, the best thing THE LAST KEY has going for is the leading presence of, longtime bit player and horror icon who finally gets her overdue chance to shine. She anchors the film with the requisite gravity needed to make the sillier parts of the story feel real enough, and when she isn’t reduced to slowly wandering around in dark and creaky rooms for overlong durations, or sappily trading mawkish lines with, she’s allowed by ’s script to show what an exceptional actor she’s always been, even when it’s in between lines with a look of her face or eyes. It’s great to see her get such a prominent role, if for no other reason than as a small token of gratitude for being such a horror champion, along with her brother, for such a long time. Speaking of Whannell, here he delegates his directorial duties of to Adam Robitel (THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN), who serviceably elicits the proper tone, tenor and territory of the franchise. He may lack some of the fancier directorial flourishes of, but he shines most when handling protracted scenes inside The Further, during which much of the second half takes place. Alhough I wish it’d been more terrifying, for a cheaply made PG-13 horror flick, I suppose INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY is good enough to warrant a fifth franchise chapter. If so, I’m all for keeping Shaye as the principal lead, but better care ought to be taken to ensure that even the most jaded of horror fan finds their fill somewhere in the film. If not, the INSIDIOUS franchise will inevitably lose credibility and continue to devolve into a 100-minute space where only casual fans and defensive die-hards can enjoy the product. If this turns out to NOT be THE LAST KEY, then the next one better unlock the hardcore horror for real!

Den of Thieves is essentially a remake of Michael Mann's Heat, only Al Pacino and Robert De Niro are replaced by Gerard Butler and Pablo Schreiber. Round out the cast with a rapper and the son of a rapper and you have a tailor made B-movie that shouldn't take itself too seriously. At first, that is pretty much what you get, but then it slowly becomes clear that Den of Thieves is blissfully unaware that it is bad. There are several subplots that belong in a more serious movie that bloat the runtime up to a lengthy 2 hours and 20 minutes when it should be a full hour shorter. The script tries to get way too clever for its own good adding twists and turns that feel more ridiculous than enjoyable. First time director Christian Gudegast clearly demonstrates that his talents unfortunately lie elsewhere as he incorporates several shots that would feel heavy handed in even the most serious dramas. On a positive note, the action sequences are fairly exciting even if it took an odd route to get there. The heist itself was the highlight of the movie and despite a few plot holes it played on screen about as well as any movie heists this side of the Ocean's trilogy. They were also able to recapture Heat's ambiguity as to who is the protagonist, though it was less through making both sides appealing and more through just wedging in that they all love their families. If you are looking for a fun heist movie, then check out Netflix, because there are a lot of better ones out there than this. Hard to believe that it has been 10 years since Liam Neeson became an unexpected action star with the lean, spare but brutally effective thriller 'Taken', and in the decade that's passed cemented his late renaissance with well-executed B-movie fare like 'The A-Team', 'The Grey', 'Unknown', 'Non-Stop' and 'Run All Night'. The last three were also notable for being collaborations with director Jaume Collet-Serra, and the now 65-year-old has extended their team-up with 'The Commuter', which sees Serra further lay claim to a modern-day Alfred Hitchcock with a couple of high-wire scenes that would certainly make the latter proud. As with before, there is a high-concept scenario at the heart of this deliberately old-fashioned thriller: an everyday insurance salesman Michael McCauley (Neeson) finds his routine evening commute back home from work disrupted by the enigmatic stranger Joanna (Vera Farmiga), who sits opposite him on the Metro-North train and offers him a hefty financial reward if he is able to spot someone on the train who isn't a familiar face. In order for Michael to be tempted in the first place, first-time screenwriters Byron Willinger and Philip de Blasi set him up to lose his job on that same day, leaving him floundering over his two mortgages as well as tuition fees for his college-bound son - although because this is Neeson we're talking about, you know Michael will eventually do the right, honorable and even heroic thing. To up the ante, Michael is only given slightly more than half an hour before the train reaches Cold Spring to find the individual he is told later on goes by the name of Prynne; and to raise the stakes, it turns out that Joanna has also held his wife and son hostage, both of whom she threatens to kill if Michael fails to complete his mission. True to his Hitchcockian ambition, Serra spins an intriguing web of mystery over most of the middle act, and there are at least three riveting questions that are teased. Who is Prynne? Who is Joanna and/or the people she is working with or for? And finally, what does Joanna want with Prynne? These in turn translate into solid character work for the proverbial strangers on the train whom Michael probes to locate his mark - among them a feisty college student (Florence Pugh), an arrogant Wall Street banker (Shazad Latif), an emotionally distraught nurse (Clara Lago), a tattooed bruiser (Roland Moller) and a taciturn teenager (Ella-Rae Smith). Yet Serra is all too aware that a whodunnit in and of itself is unlikely to satiate a good proportion of his audience, who are here to watch Neeson engage in the sort of close-quarter fisticuffs a la 'Taken'. So in between playing detective, Michael also gets a couple of well-choregraphed brawls - one of them takes place in the confines between carriages, while another that is impressively done in a single take plays out over an entire carriage with everything from a gun, an ax, a guitar and seat cushions used as weapons. There is visibly concerted effort to keep these fight sequences real, so even though Neeson's character is revealed earlier on to be an ex-cop, the film doesn't (thankfully) use that as an excuse to gift him with 'a very particular set of skills' to take down his opponents too easily, skilfully or neatly. Like other locomotive-set thrillers, this one doesn't escape without the train in question going out of control and then literally off the rails. That it is well-staged is undeniable - not even some subpar CGI in some shots can detract from the sheer white-knuckle tension of seeing almost the whole train flip into the air - but this spectacle-fuelled conclusion arguably strains the credibility of the high-concept movie even further, and is therefore both better and worse off for it. Notwithstanding, Neeson remains through and through the film's emotional centre, conveying the frustration, helplessness and resolve of a regular guy who is trying to get his life back in control from those that have snatched it away from him. Lest we forget, this is a role that the thespian can easily do in his sleep, but Neeson still brings his considerable gravitas to bear. Mind you, not all the gaps in the narrative will be filled in by the end (which seems to set up the possibility of a sequel) nor will some of the explanations pass muster under closer scrutiny. Still, a film like this isn't meant to be held up under such examination or intended to offer any more than solid B-movie guilty pleasures; on the latter count though, it does succeed brilliantly and beautifully by mixing classic Hitchcockian tension with adrenaline-pumping action. We dare say that it ranks among one of Neeson's best in his action oeuvre, and if you're in the mood for some pulpy thrills and suspense, then you'll definitely want to get on this train. Having moved away from my homeland when I was eighteen years old, and spending my twenties as a reporter jumping on planes two or three times a month, I now mostly travel vicariously through my girl. She has a touch of wanderlust, a lovely feeling (mentioned by some of you in the comments of my last post) that the world is hers. On Instagram, she captioned these two photos 'Happy on the west coast.' She came back from her weeklong trip talking about moving there, not necessarily to L.A., which is where she was, but she wants to check out San Diego. 'Oh God, do you mean we're going to have to get on a plane to see our grandchildren?' She just laughed. California whispers to her soul. My girl is flying home from LA today, after having what appears from her social media posts to have been a fun-filled visit. Here's a photo of her and Henri, who became one of my favorites of the friends she made college. Henri, who grew up in Hawaii and Botswana and then went to a private boarding school in the Midwest (Ohio or Indiana, I can't remember at this moment), now lives in LA, and she had a whole agenda of activities planned for our girl. Much like my daughter, her spirit is joyful. I love these young women together. Henri, who used to stay with us sometimes on the way back to college, once talked with me about the itinerant's sense of home, they way it is always shifting, never quite rooted, always with a whisper or a side-eye of but where are you really from? Settled in with the Brown family, Paddington the bear is a popular member of the community who spreads joy and marmalade wherever he goes. One fine day. I knew exactly what she meant. I am an American citizen, yet after 43 years of studying and living and working and raising a family and paying taxes in this country, I still feel as if my claim on this place is fragile, understood by some as illegitimate. When I speak my piece on the current goings on in government, I can always hear the unspoken, then why don't you go back home? But this is the land where my children were born. And so I will stake my claim defiantly, and express my opinions as vociferously as I choose, because my children's rights to this land, and all that is in it, are inalienable. Safe travels home, my berry girl. See you when you land. I'm under pressure with two deadlines over here, an edit of a manuscript and the finish of a proposal, for which I still have to craft a sample chapter. So I may be scarce for a while, maybe just posting pictures. I should note, however, that I turned in my book to the publisher this week. The editor hasn't read it yet, she has other manuscripts queued up, but my subject was happy with how her story turned out and her agent was happy, and my agent, after spending yesterday on her couch reading, sent me the most wonderful note last night. I don't want to blow by these milestones. The editor is the one to please, of course, but I'm still relieved that two very tough readers did not think the book sucked. Here's another rediscovered photo, this one of my parents with my daughter the month after she was born. My girl is in L.A. Right now, visiting college friends and lifer friends. Yesterday her social media was full of boomerangs of the Santa Monica Pier, the waves doing a cha cha on the shore, the pilings under the boardwalk, riding a bicycle along a concrete path, daredevils in the skate park. This is the trip she abandoned at the airport gate last Labor Day weekend, when I called to tell her that her dad would be having surgery the following day. I find I still watch my husband closely, trying to make sure no symptoms are missed, the fantasy of complete control. He's been casting his mind back lately, realizing that his heart had been going bad for years, and he ignored all the signs. Everybody in New York is tired, he used to say. He sees more clearly now. My aunt's funeral service went off with many hitches. First, the snow storm caused flights from everywhere to be cancelled, leaving my brother and niece stranded in Jamaica. My cousin from Nassau who was supposed to deliver the eulogy, and our cousins who were traveling up from Florida also had their flights cancelled, but the Virginia, Maryland and Boston cousins drove or took the bus, despite the so called bomb cyclone that dumped so much snow and blanketed the Northeast in subzero temperatures. The service itself was an exercise in acceptance. There was no program, and therefore much confusion about what was supposed to happen next. The priest clearly knew nothing about our aunt, and should not have bothered to deliver an address of any sort, as his words only highlighted his lack of preparation. My cousin Helen was sitting beside me. I turned to her and whispered, 'I think they needed more support with planning. I feel awful that I didn't offer more help.' Helen beamed her bright impish smile and whispered back, 'That is just self-abuse. Everything is happening exactly as it's meant to.' I relaxed then, and let everything be just what it was. At the repast after, the food didn't arrive for hours. The service had been a morning one and most people hadn't eaten breakfast, including me. Despite almost everyone being ravenous, the milling around and catching up with family was lovely. My cousin Winsome had found a box of photographs in her garage that had belonged to our Uncle Charlie, who died ten years ago now. She had sorted the photos in different envelopes to be parceled out to family members, and we all pored over each others pictures, remembering who and what and when. That was definitely a highlight. My own envelope included photos of my children as babies and toddlers and at birthday parties for which Uncle Charle usually baked the cake. My daughter and niece immediately started snapping photos of the photos and posting them on social media for my son, who was out of town at an alumni track meet, and their cousins in Vancouver, who also weren't there. Not to be outdone, I'm posting one of my favorite photo rediscoveries here. It's Sunday afternoon now. All our houseguests are back on the road heading home, and my husband just walked in carting bags of groceries. He plans to make zucchini noodle lasagna for dinner. He just said to me, 'You know, I love when the kids come by and hang out with us, and I love having our extended family stay in our home, but there is a certain joy I feel when I know I'm coming home to just you.' After 31 years of marriage, his words made my heart smile. Our nest isn't empty at all. We have family coming to town tomorrow. My brother and my niece are flying in from Jamaica, and my cousin and her husband and three grown boys are driving up from Virginia, all staying with us. They're coming to attend our Aunt Fay's funeral in New Jersey on Saturday, the eighth of the nine elder siblings to whom we must say goodbye. The weather isn't cooperating. The Northeast is experiencing something called a bomb cyclone of snowfall, a blizzard whipped by hurricane force winds. Several inches have already fallen on the city, and tomorrow, when the snow ends, is expected to be a deep freeze. I am working away, trying not to slip into the familiar anxiety that assails me whenever company’s coming. The house is clean, but cluttered from the holidays, and the Christmas tree is still up, though well past its prime. But the snow is pretty, especially from inside. The day before the animated family film Paddington 2 was scheduled to debut in cinemas, Russia’s Ministry of Culture postponed the release from January 18 to February 1, sparking backlash from the country’s Association of Cinema Owners. In a Facebook statement on Wednesday, the organisation called the decision to delay Paddington 2 But the incident illustrated Russia’s ongoing initiative to prop up its own film industry, one where nine of 10 films are government-funded and often cast Russia in a positive light. The cinema is just one domain where the modern Russian system walks a fine line of sheltering citizens from Western ideals that may not agree with President Vladimir Putin’s view of the world and Russia’s role in it. A law allows the Ministry of Culture to bump foreign films, such as Paddington 2, if their release dates coincide with that of a locally produced film. The rule was enacted two years ago. At the time, culture minister Vladimir Medinsky seemed to make a veiled threat regarding the content of Russian cinema. “We won’t fight for every (Russian) film,” he said then. “We will set financial, political or ideological priorities.” In 2015, Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan, a movie about Russia produced by Russians, had its release date postponed by the Ministry of Culture even as it was a hit at international film festivals and won a Golden Globe for best foreign-language film. The bleak tale of a man’s battle with a corrupt local bureaucrat was criticised as anti-Russian and undermining Putin. In response, Russia outlawed movies “defiling the national culture, posing a threat to national unity and undermining the foundations of the constitutional order.” The Ministry of Culture ultimately reversed its course on that legislation, and public curiosity led to the film’s wide release in Russia. Medinsky said at the time that the characters, shown taking swigs of vodka, “are not Russians,” and that films “filled with a sense of despair and hopelessness over our existence, should not be financed with taxpayers’ money.” Russia banned swearing in arts and media in 2014, which meant that a sanitised version of the film ran in theatres. The release of Paddington 2 – which has a rare 100 per cent “fresh” rating on the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes – was not postponed because of its content, but because of what appeared to be an attempt to eliminate some box office competition for the home-grown Scythian, a historical drama also scheduled to debut on January 18, and Going Vertical, a patriotic Soviet sports flick about the USSR’s Olympic basketball triumph over the US team in 1972. Amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia, Going Vertical is now Russia’s highest-grossing film ever. “We will do everything in the interests of the industry, Russian cinema, but not in the interests of Hollywood,” said Medinsky, according to Interfax. In its statement, the Russian Association of Cinema Owners said this is not the first time the government has intervened in a movie’s release date, but it found the last-minute nature of the decision especially outrageous, citing economic damage to the theatres and distributors, who had advertised a January 18 date for Paddington 2. Tickets that were bought in advance had to be refunded to spectators. “You, with your own initiatives, have turned the standard state service for issuing a rental certificate into an instrument of censorship,” the Association of Cinema Owners’ statement said. Several Russian producers, directors and actors penned an open letter arguing that the government support has led to a 120 per cent increase in box office revenue for local films since 2011. The practice of granting Russian movies the best release dates while foreign films are occasionally “moved” to a different date is one manifestation of that backing. Just three years ago, Medinsky considered introducing a cap on the number of movies imported to the country each year, according to The Guardian. Then last year, he proposed to lawmakers that one way to boost the Russian film industry would be to make tickets for foreign movies more expensive than local ones, as the state budget for cinema is less than half of what Hollywood spends on a single blockbuster. In 2016, just two Russian films, The Flight Crew and Viking, cracked the country’s top 25 earners. In 2017, four films finished in the top 25, not including Going Vertical, which is still in theatres and succeeding. Viking came under some scrutiny for how it distinguished between the dirty and violent pagans and the civilised Christians, another ode to the influential Russian Orthodox Church and the government’s agenda. Putin and Medinsky were reportedly among the first viewers, both apparently fans. Paddington Bear captures the heart and warms the soul of everyone he meets onscreen — and he’s done the same offscreen as well. Paddington 2, the sequel film following the misadventures of the marmalade-obsessed bear, has set a new record on Rotten Tomatoes, becoming the best-reviewed film ever on the review aggregator website. It received 167 fresh reviews and zero negative responses, surpassing the previous record held by Toy Story 2 at 163 fresh and zero negative. Paddington 2 holds a rare and coveted 100 percent fresh score. Back in November, it seemed Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird would surpass Toy Story 2, but it received one negative review, which knocked it from the top spot and pushed it down to 99 percent fresh. The Paddington sequel, inspired by writer Michael Bond’s Paddington Bear character, has earned universal praise, as well as several BAFTA nominations, including nods for Best British Film and one for Hugh Grant’s devilishly gleeful turn as the villainous actor Phoenix Buchanan. Discussing the overwhelmingly positive response to the film, director Paul King told Deadline, “It’s incredibly gratifying. It’s such a strange process making these films which are preposterously labor-intensiveIt’s a strange experience and you can’t help but hope for the best for this little character and the film you’ve created. It’s very lovely they [the critics] were warm and enthusiastic.” Paddington 2 opened in seventh place in its first weekend at the U.S. Box office, but looks to continue to attract larger audiences buoyed by strong words of mouth — it received an “A” CinemaScore — and this new record.
